A Day in the Life

You start by reviewing the work order and the latest drawings in the Available Documents program. With the right sequence in mind, you gather your torque wrenches, gauges, and fixtures. You verify fits with precision instruments, install keenserts and fasteners, etch part IDs, and hydro/vacuum test assemblies as required. Throughout the shift, you log accurate time in IDC, coordinate with teammates, and keep your station organized and clean.

What You’ll Do
  • Interpret blueprints, sketches, drawings, routing instructions, manuals, and specifications to determine required dimensions and tolerances.
  • Apply torque methods and sequencing using torque wrenches to achieve correct fastener preload.
  • Measure and verify work using precision measuring instruments.
  • Operate hand tools and shop equipment, including grinders, jitter bugs, and drills.
  • Install thread inserts, keenserts, and a range of fasteners.
  • Run and troubleshoot equipment such as electro etchers, hydro test pumps, and vacuum pumps.
  • Handle materials with fork trucks and overhead cranes.
  • Enter accurate data into the IDC data collection system to ensure precise labor reporting.
  • Access and use the “Available Documents” program properly.
  • Maintain daily cleanliness of equipment and workstations.
  • Communicate effectively with coworkers and your supervisor to coordinate activities.
Accountabilities
  • Produce conforming components that meet all blueprint dimensions within stated tolerances; ensure all moving parts function correctly.
  • Protect and preserve internal components and final appearance; uphold cleanliness standards.
  • Follow all SOPs and WIs; maintain a safe, clean, and organized work area.
Qualifications
  • Core capability: Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and the ability to work confidently with hand tools, torque tools, and precision measuring instruments.
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; at least one year of trade school, vocational education, or apprenticeship preferred (not required).
  • Experience: Not applicable.
  • Certification Required: Not applicable.
Physical and Sensory Requirements
  • Physical Demands: Stand, walk, push, pull, reach overhead, and bend to floor; exert 50–100 lbs occasionally, 25–50 lbs frequently, and up to 10–20 lbs constantly to move objects.
  • Visual Acuity: Near acuity and accommodation required for reading blueprints and assembling small details.
  • Hearing Ability: Ability to monitor machine sounds to identify and diagnose changes in order to take appropriate action. Accommodations as required for communicating with employees.
Working Conditions
  • High noise levels from operating machines.
  • Physical hazards from moving equipment and production components.
  • Exposure to fumes, dust, and mist.
  • Skin contact with oils and cutting fluids.
